Sold Your Vehicle in Georgia? Don't Forget to Cancel Your Insurance the Right Way

You sold your extra vehicle — great! But if you simply stop paying the insurance without notifying the Georgia Department of Revenue, you could start receiving fines for an insurance lapse on a car you no longer own. Here's what to do to protect yourself.

Selling a car in Georgia requires a specific order of steps to avoid fines

Step 1: Surrender the License Plate First

Georgia tracks insurance by license plate. When you sell a vehicle, you must surrender the license plate to your local tag office — in Douglas County, that's the Douglas County Tax Commissioner's office. If you don't, the state may issue fines when your insurance is cancelled, believing you're driving an uninsured vehicle.

Step 2: Cancel the Insurance After the Plate Is Surrendered

Once the plate is surrendered, contact your insurance agent to cancel coverage on that vehicle. Do not cancel the insurance first — that can trigger a lapse notice to the state before the plate is off the road. Your agent can walk you through the correct order of steps.
